Terms of Use
These terms govern your use of empowerthepatients.org, operated by From the Hart Management LLC. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use the site.
This is not medical advice
Nothing on this site is medical advice, and nothing here creates a doctor-patient relationship.
We publish advocacy journalism and educational material. We are not clinicians, we do not know your history, your medications, or your diagnosis, and we cannot account for any of it. Do not delay seeking care, disregard advice from your care team, or change a treatment because of something you read here.
If you are in a medical emergency, call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department.
What we are trying to do is narrower and more useful than advice: help you understand what is known, what is contested, and what questions are worth asking. The goal is to send you into the appointment better prepared, not to replace it.
Medical information changes. An article accurate when published may not be accurate when you read it. Coverage rules change, trials close, guidance is revised. We date everything so you can judge, and we correct what we get wrong.
What we publish, and its limits
We work from sources we cite and link, so you can check us. We make mistakes anyway. If you find one, tell us and we will correct it and say that we did.
We do not endorse any treatment, provider, product, insurer, or organization. Where we describe research, we describe what the research says — which is not the same as saying it applies to you.
Your stories
If you send us your account for publication, here is exactly what happens to it.
You keep ownership. You grant us a non-exclusive license to publish, display, and distribute what you sent, on this site and on our social channels, in the form you approved. You can publish it anywhere else you like.
You can take it back. Email us and we will remove it, ordinarily within 30 days. We cannot recall material already distributed elsewhere, and archives outside our control may retain copies.
You control your name. Tell us how you want to be identified, including anonymously or by first name only, and we will follow it. If you later want your name removed from a published piece, we will do that too.
We will not edit meaning. We may edit for length, clarity, and grammar. We will not change what you said, and you approve the final text before publication.
By submitting, you confirm the account is yours to tell, that you have permission for any identifiable third party you describe, and that you are not sending confidential medical records.
Acceptable use
Do not use the site to harass anyone, impersonate anyone, break the law, scrape or copy content at scale, interfere with the site's operation, or misrepresent yourself as speaking for EmPOWERthePATIENTS. We may restrict access for any of these.
Our content and marks
Site content is owned by From the Hart Management LLC or used with permission. EmPOWERthePATIENTS™ and the butterfly mark are our trademarks.
You may share and quote our articles with attribution and a link. You may not republish them in full, sell them, or use our marks in a way suggesting we endorse you. For reprint permission, email us — we are generally glad to say yes.
Other sites we link to
We link to research, organizations, and resources we believe are useful. We do not control them, do not endorse everything on them, and are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.
No warranty
The site is provided "as is." We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that its content is complete or current. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all implied warranties including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, From the Hart Management LLC and its officers, members, and contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the site, including any decision made in reliance on its content.
Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations, so they may not apply to you.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless From the Hart Management LLC from claims arising out of your misuse of the site, your violation of these terms, or content you submit.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to conflict of laws principles. Disputes will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Palm Beach County, Florida.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date above will change. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it.
